4 years on and still fantastic!

- 5 / 5 stars -2 weeks ago

We were last here 4 years ago and had really happy memories of a family meal.Coming back this evening reminded us why. The gazpacho and croquettes were fabulous to start with the tuna in Barbate sauce being wonderful. The rest of the family had mackerel, fillets of fresh fish etc which were both beautifully presented and tasted great. The recommended dry Cadiz white wine was the perfect compliment.Another fantastic memory made for our wedding anniversary!

Welcoming atmosphere and great local food

- 5 / 5 stars -3 months ago

The restaurant is located in Zahora and offers a beautiful terrace setting. The croquetas caseras (homemade croquetas) are the best I have eaten in some time..and I have eaten a lot! 😉 Antonio is a welcoming owner with loads of recommendations for his guests. We had Gambas al ajillo and Almejas marineras, all tasted very good and is absolutely recommendable! Same for the red wine, Trus, from Ribera del Duero.

Beautiful location, gorgeous fish

- 5 / 5 stars -3 months ago

We nearly didn't go in because there was no menu with prices outside, but I am so glad that we did. We are fortunate to have been in Spain for 4 weeks and this is the best food we have eaten. The situation is lovely with shady or sunny options and beautiful plants. The service is friendly and helpful. We loved the tempora anchovies and then fish of the day ( red snapper, I believe) with grilled veg and pinenut cream plus tuna casserole which is much lighter than it sounds. It was all fresh and imaginatively prepared. The wine is also excellent and reasonable. A real treat overall.

Warm welcome and excellent food.

- 5 / 5 stars -4 months ago

This family run restaurant has a friendly atmosphere which makes for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The food quality, variety and presentation is excellent. Advice from Antonio is helpful and geared around what you tell him he will offer suggestions. The Tapas are a good way to start the meal and if you like wine it is reasonably priced as is the food. Sitting inside the cosy open plan structure is comfortable weather sheltering from the sun or at night to keep warm. Our first visit here but not the last.

Local food with some delicious twists

- 5 / 5 stars -11 months ago

This is a delightful semi outdoor restaurant, under a canopy in a lovely garden. The restaurant is busy, and well organised by friendly, attentive but not fussy staff. The ambience is relaxed, and the focus is very much on the food. Starters show plenty of choice; we had superb croquetas and a plate of tempura anchovies. Be warned; the plate of anchovies is massive, and plenty for two as a starter or even a light lunch! Given the area, the red tuna is a must try, and a whole section of the menu is devoted to this local delicacy. We were not disappointed; serving tuna as a tartare or sashimi style demands the freshest and highest quality fish, and that’s exactly what we got. Tartare was served on a guacamole style base, and was subtly marinaded. The sashimi had been seared very quickly with a coating of sesame and poppy seeds, then served with wasabi and a soy dip. Both were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Sharing from each other’s plates in the Spanish style is expected and encouraged, and we took full advantage! There is a small range of desserts, again, beautifully prepared and served. We can recommend the cheesecake with fig compote(sounds a bit ‘ho hum’, but not when it’s as well done as this!), and my personal star of the show, ‘la Brena ‘. This is a house dish made from local ingredients, and I’ve never tasted anything like it. It’s a mousse, but with some really unusual textures and flavours, and definitely not to be missed. We were watching other dishes coming out from the charcoal-grill equipped kitchen, and thinking ‘I want to try that’. We’re going back....

Chilled restaurant with excellent food

- 4 / 5 stars -2 years ago

This is a picturesque garden based restaurant. Based largely outside in a well tended garden picturesque garden. The service is quite relaxed and understated. Just as I like it.The location isn't great being quite far from the beach but it's the food that's the star here. Tasty and well presented.I'll be back next year.

Very friendly staff

Are here shortly after arriving in Zahora. The staff are excellent. Very friendly and flexible in order to ensure you get what you need - especially important if you have kids! The food is also very good. All in all a very good experience.

Tried a Trip advisor recommendation after visit to Cape Trafalgar

- 5 / 5 stars -2 years ago

What an amazing find! Delicious food - tried all sorts from the menu - Squid Ink Rice, Sea Nettles (Sea Anemone) scramble and Tuna in different ways (especially liked the Sushi style and the dish on Advocado). Great attention and friendly service by English speaking head waiter. Hope to be back next year!

Excellent fresh and local Spanish food on a lovely terrace

- 5 / 5 stars -2 years ago

Having been away from the Costa de la Luz for a decade, I have now come back to discover that a lot of the rustic, down to earth local food has been replaced with pretentious cooking often emulating Japanese, Peruvian or Nordic cuisine. Not so La Traiña - fresh local produce, served with cariño (love, care) and without any weird frills. We had the croquetas with Spinach and those with ham - outstanding, the fresh fish of the day served with veggies and home made fries - excellent and I gorged on a pine-nut flan. If all of this is enticing, the service was also wonderful - friendly, courteous and also making sure, that we always ordered a variety of dishes so we could for instance taste two different croquetas or two varieties of fish. We will be back and I really hope they will not change. Oh, and I forgot to say that the pricing is more than reasonable.

Good service

- 4 / 5 stars -2 years ago

Ate here on our first night back in Zahora, this wasn't open last year so good to try a new restaurant in a village where there is a lot of choice. The gardens and terrace area are well furnished and a pleasant area to sit to eat. The service was excellent and very helpful and friendly. The croquettes were amazing as a starter to share, very tasty, light and crisp, would go back just to have those again! Unfortunately the tuna was a little over cooked. We asked for a cordado at then end of our meal but the coffee machine was broken, a few minutes later the bar man reappeared with 2 coffees which he had gone to his own kitchen to make, very good as well. What service! Would have given 5 stars if not for overlooked tuna, which was a real shame. Would try again for something different off the menu.

This restaurant goes to prove that you dont need to spend a lot of money to have a good meal cooked in ideal conditions. All the seafood is fresh and delicious....and its not at all expensive. The wine list is above average and the seeting is relaxing. Will be going back soon !!

Very special

- 5 / 5 stars -3 years ago

Staying in a private villa literally 2 minutes away from La Traina, we couldn't believe that our nearest restaurant would turn out to be so great. Great chilled out ambience in a lovely garden setting. Wonderful cuisine, especially their seared tuna takini and the seafood rice dish strangely not called paella! Our waiter José was very welcoming and spoke good English too. It was such good value and the food so good we decided to come back again for our last night. Highly recommended.

Great tuna

- 5 / 5 stars -3 years ago

The young woman at the desk of the hotel where we were staying told us her brother just opened this restaurant and to try it. We did and were glad we did. The wait staff was excellent and nice atmosphere. Lot of free parking. I ordered a mixed salad. The waiter told me it was large and one was plenty. My goodness we both could have had plenty to eat and ordered nothing else.. Very fresh. I decided to order the tuna that was prepared in the local custom. Came with several chunks of tuna in a cream sauce. Highly recommend it. My husband ordered tiger prawns. They were huge and a lot of them. We were so full! When we are back in that area we will definitely be back.

Best tuna in the south of spain

- 5 / 5 stars -3 years ago

I know.. It Is tuna season in this area so getting high quality tuna is easy... But We just being to El Campero at Barbate ( a high end restaurant you have to book months in advance that treats you like you have the honor to be served at ... while sitting at the bar paying like you are at a Michelin star restaurant ) .. While the "el Campero " will remain in my top 15 Restaurants worldwide cause it is amazing ,.. by far la Traiña is the best restaurant i have encountered in the south of spain ..affordable, incredible fresh fish quality, the cook (that btw, i 've learned is from a family of old fisher men and cooks better that any graduated chef ) prepares the dishes perfectly, on time and in the exact temperature .. If you are into drinks gin tonics are served like in a five star hotel, service is simple but yet impecable , my german shaper is welcomed like a VIP.. And each waiter makes me feel like family.. Honestly , There is so much to highlight that it will sound like i've being paid a million bucks but i swear i am just became the biggest fan of this place..so much, i have just canceled my wedding venue while loosing the deposit to book this humble yet amazing place for next summer.. I love food and Im in love with their food !! Simply in love .. I'll be back and i hope this place will remain open so my great grand children can sit in these same tables and experience what great simple food is all about. My best wishes it was an honored to sit at your tables and i will see you soon!! Very very soon!!

Family evening meal

- 5 / 5 stars -4 years ago

We stumbled across La Traina when looking for an up market family meal. The setting is fabulous (it reminded us both of Pembrokeshire and West Sussex on a lovely summer's evening! The food and wine was lovely and the waiter was extremely helpful (speaking English was helpful to help give the best advice). The sardines and tuna were fabulous. It wasn't cheap but we certainly enjoyed.

Agradable para ir con niños

Es muy cómodo porque tiene parking enfrente, y la terraza es muy agradable y esta bien cuidado. La comida es normal, mejor para picoteo y compartir platos. Los precios estan en relacion con la calidad y el servicio es correcto.
